Personal Response

Alone
By: Siegfried Sassoon

This poem is beautifully done, it has such a natural flow to it. This piece has a perfect symmetrical flow, perfect meter and perfect verse and has a simple lay out. There is a lot of imagery in this poem, every odd line has imagery in it and rhymes with the line above it.

It makes me think of how it feels to be alone and how everything is so noticeable when you are feeling alone. I find with old poetry there is more thought put into it. This can make old poetry like this poem, have more meaning behind the words. The author has a lot to do with what meaning is behind the poem, because usually the best poems are written from within the author.

Writing and poetry has always been a tool for reflecting and commenting on society. During the 20th century many poets reacted to problems in the world with poems. With very highly emotionally charged poems. World War I poets have a lot of horror and deep description of war and the spiritual degradation it inflects. Siegfried Sassoon was a soldier and a poet. His poems reflect the loss of innocence and the horrible mental and physical toll World War I inflicted on the world.

  1. Not bad, although a little more linking the poem to your own life would make it much better, and trying to get a little more descriptive in that way would help also.
